Suppose your opponents have opened 2 (natural and weak). What should these bids mean:

Direct jump to 4, 4, or 4
Jump to 4NT
Cuebid of 3
Double, followed by bidding a new suit
Double, followed by 3NT (compare to a direct 3NT)

Now suppose opponents have opened 3. What should these bids mean:

Direct jump to 4, 4, or 4
Jump to 4NT
Cuebid of 4
Double, followed by bidding a new suit
Double, followed by 3NT (compare to a direct 3NT)

Hopefully some partnerships have discussed this more than mine have.

2S:

4C=forcing, C+H
4D=forcing D+H
4H=good suit, good hand.
3S=stopper ask
4S=strong minor 2 suiter
4N=less strong minor 2 suiter (still good enough to force to the 5 level though obviously)
X followed by hearts shows a flexible hand (1633, 15[43], etc) and extras
X followed by a minor covers more ground because of leaping michaels. Can just be a 1 suited minor hand type, or flexible.

3C:
4D-D+major forcing
4H=natural good suit good hand
4S=natural good suit good hand
4N=natural...23(?)+ or so. not sure on the range...too strong to feel safe bidding 3N though
cuebid=both majors, could be not that great a hand.
X then a major is a flexible hand type (with extras)
X then diamonds could be just a 1 suited diamond hand or flexible.
X then 3N tolerance for major suit contracts.

Note that Fred recommended in a different thread that 2S-3S can also be a very strong single suiter, stronger than jumping to 5C immediately.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

I play the same as Justin with exception: (2) - 4 is a freakish + minor

I like his treatment of (3) - 4N as a big balanced hand. Or could it be a source of tricks too strong for a direct 3N? Hand like: Ax, Qx, AKQxxxxx, A seem about right.

While were discussing this: what does everyone play after the 3N overcall over 3 minor?
