Why is defense so hard? One critical and understated factor is alertness for opportunities to act. And it can't be properly done in problems. For instance you will probably find the solution to this problem fairly easy but inattention at the table will result in a missed opportunity. Here you are alert that a problem exists but at the table a run of the mill set of hands may put you to sleep when it comes up.

The auction is as follows
All red in a MP event.
The opponents are playing precision

West North East South
P--- P---- 1C*- P
1D*- P---- 2C-- P
2S-- P---- 4S-- all pass

Partner leads the K. As South plan the defense.
Scoring: MP

"Tell me of your home world, Usul"
the Freman, Chani from the move "Dune"

Seems straightforward, like you say.
Overtake pard's K w/A.
Lead back your "obvious" singleton Cl 9.
When in w/Sp K, return low Ht to pard's Q,
and get your Cl ruff.

I was N and partner left me to guess the best defense by playing the 9

A minor point - your deck seems to have 14 spades and 12 hearts.

But generally you're right that defence is hard - and you absolutely needs to be on your toes all the time - can be exhausting especially if the cards conspire to put you and pard on the defensive most of the session. But, well done, it can be very satisfying to hit declarer with an uppercut or something. Satisfying almost to the point of being addictive.

I had to provide 13 xes for the hand diagram

While I agree the defense is obvious if you stop and visualize the hand playing out, I admit I almost certainly wouldn't notice it in time playing in a random pickup game online. Half of my mind is still focusing on the LAST hand at that point, trying to figure out what I did right/wrong, would a different lead have helped, etc.
